Cartoons about Strange Times

Amid the sick and dying from a virus, it is hard to see a funny side to the damage that this protein does to the individual, community, nation, and world. One way that I cope with my fears and anxieties in this bizarre moment in time that everyone is experiencing is to laugh–when I can.

While that sounds macabre in of itself, I have managed my panic by seeing the humor–surely not in the sick or dying and the havoc that it does to families–but in my fear-laden responses and those of my family, friends, colleagues, and Americans. Cartoonists, as is their wont, have not sat idle as this disease has spread and reactions have ranged from sane to insane.

So I offer this selection of cartoons on the responses to coronavirus and Covid-19 for those who seek a moment to laugh amid the anxiety and fear that surround all of us.

Larry:It’s sad to see you posting political anti-Trump cartoons at this time. Why are you trying to unload many of your fans? As Michael Jordan once said, “Conservative buy sneakers too.” Please try to keep your political bias to yourself as everyone needs your educational expertise. Dr. Doug GreenOtherwise a huge fan.

It saddens me to see your criticism of Larry Cuban’s longstanding affection for editorial cartoons, in this case treating the many bizarre and unexpected responses to the virus and the President’s often untrustworthy statements about its effects. Larry is the owner of this blog, and if you look at recent posts you will see the wisdom he has to offer in more traditional reflections.
After listening to several days of two-hour (plus) publicity campaigns from Trump presented as if a legitimate press conferences, I would say that there is insufficient criticism of his handling of this tragedy. These editorial cartoons are spot on for this terrible interlude, including its many absurdities. The editorial cartoonists are also reminding us of how our assumptions about “normal” living are being shattered.
